Homemade Play-dough

You didn’t plan for it, but it is a rainy day. The kids are antsy and all you are hearing is “Mommmmmmmmmm, I’m booooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrred!” Fear not. I have the perfect activity for young ones! Play-dough is a lot of fun and you can really get imaginations going. This is a great idea because it is inexpensive. Most likely you have the items you need in your very own pantry! If it isn’t a rainy day, check out this chalk paint!

The ingredients you need are

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup of salt
  • 4 tsp cream of tarter
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsp corn oil or vegetable oil
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • sandwich sized bags

First stir together the flour, salt, and cream of tarter in a pot. Next add the water and oil. If you are only making one color, you can add it now. Cook this mix over medium heat until it has thickened and forms a ball. Remove from heat and place inside wax paper to cool. If you have not added the color, separate the play-dough into different bags. Add the coloring to the bag and knead it while in the bag. This will keep your hands from being all sorts of different colors! (I learned this lesson the hard way!)
